AEO & AI agents: getting found in the AI era
Being found by a human typing into a search box is no longer the whole game — a real, growing share of discovery now runs through an AI answer, or an AI agent acting on someone's behalf. Here's the honest, practical version of what that actually changes.
What AEO actually is
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — is the real, now-current practice of structuring content so an AI system (a chat assistant, an AI search overview, an AI agent) can actually understand it well enough to summarize it accurately and cite it as a source. It's a genuinely new discipline, not a rebrand of SEO, because the "reader" being optimized for is now sometimes a model generating a synthesized answer, not a human scanning a results page.
AEO vs. SEO — the real difference
SEO's job is getting your real page ranked high enough for a human to click it. AEO's job is getting your real content understood and trusted well enough that an AI system quotes or cites it directly — sometimes without the person ever clicking through to your page at all. Both still reward genuinely clear, accurate, well-structured content — they just optimize for a different moment of "being found."
Writing so an AI answer can cite you
State the real, direct answer to a real question plainly and early — an AI system summarizing your page pulls the clearest, most self-contained statement it can find, not a conclusion buried three paragraphs deep. Be specific and factual rather than vague or purely promotional — a model is far more likely to quote a concrete, checkable claim than marketing language.
Structured, crawlable, and machine-readable
Real headings that match the real question they answer. Real, semantic HTML rather than text baked into an image. A page that's actually reachable and readable by a crawler (no login wall hiding the real content you want found). None of this is exotic — it's the same honest clarity that already helps a human reader, which is exactly why it also helps a model trying to understand your page.
The rise of AI agents — a real, current shift
Beyond a human asking a chat assistant a question, autonomous AI agents are a real, growing category — software that researches, compares, and sometimes even acts (books, buys, fills forms) on a person's behalf, with far less human scanning in the loop at all. The practical implication: your content increasingly needs to hold up to being read and judged by a program, not just a person — accurate, structured, and honest about what it actually offers, since an agent won't forgive vague claims the way a human skimmer sometimes does.
What this doesn't guarantee
Said plainly: no real technique guarantees a specific AI system will cite you, and this is a genuinely fast-moving, still-settling area of practice — what works today may shift as these systems evolve. Treat everything here as real, sound, current practice, not a permanent formula.
Your real first steps
Pick one real page you already have. Rewrite its opening to state the direct answer in the first two sentences, plainly and specifically. Ask a real AI assistant the question your page answers, and see whether it already knows about your page — that's your real, current baseline to improve from.
Frequently asked
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No — they're complementary; most of the same fundamentals (clarity, structure, real expertise) help both.
Do I need a different kind of content for AI agents specifically?
Not fundamentally different — just held to a higher bar for being accurate, structured, and unambiguous, since an agent won't infer intent the way a person might.
