The complete search & AI visibility glossary
Classic search optimization split into a whole family of acronyms once AI answers entered the picture. This is the real map of that family — what each term actually means, and where it fits in a practical stack, not a wall of undefined jargon.
Why this glossary exists
Two real, in-depth guides already live in this Academy — SEO: Zero to Hero and AEO & AI Agents. This one is the map that sits above both — every real adjacent term you'll genuinely run into, defined plainly, so you know exactly which discipline a term belongs to before you go deep on it.
Core / classic search
SEO (Search Engine Optimization): ranking web pages in Google, Bing, and similar engines through content, technical health, and links.
On-page SEO (): titles, headings, content, internal links, and keyword targeting on the page itself.
Off-page SEO (): backlinks, brand mentions, and digital PR happening away from your own page.
Technical SEO (): crawlability, indexing, site speed, Core Web Vitals, schema, and sitemaps.
Local SEO (): Google Business Profile, the map pack, NAP (name/address/phone) consistency, and reviews.
SEM (Search Engine Marketing): the umbrella term for SEO plus paid search (PPC/Google Ads) together.
SXO (Search Experience Optimization): SEO combined with UX and conversion, so the ranking traffic you earn actually converts.
AI and answer-era
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): structuring content so it's pulled as the direct answer in featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, and AI answers -- covered in depth in the dedicated AEO guide linked above.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): getting your content cited or mentioned inside generative AI responses -- ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews.
LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization): making your brand and content well represented in what LLMs actually know and retrieve -- largely overlaps with GEO.
AIO (AI Optimization): used both broadly, and specifically for optimizing for Google's AI Overviews feature.
AI SEO (): a loose catch-all term covering AEO, GEO, LLMO, and AIO together.
VSO / VEO (Voice Search Optimization): conversational, long-tail, local-intent queries written for Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
Platform-specific
ASO (App Store Optimization): ranking in the Apple App Store and Google Play.
VSEO (Video SEO): YouTube-specific -- titles, chapters, transcripts, thumbnails, and retention.
Social SEO (): treating TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest as real search engines in their own right.
Marketplace SEO (): Amazon (A9/A10 algorithm), Jumia, Etsy, and eBay listing optimization.
Image SEO (): alt text, file names, image sitemaps, and visibility in Google Lens.
Supporting concepts
E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust): Google's real quality framework underlying most of its ranking decisions.
Entity / Semantic SEO (): optimizing around real entities and the Knowledge Graph, instead of keywords alone.
Schema markup (structured data): the machine-readable layer that AEO and GEO both depend on heavily.
pSEO (Programmatic SEO): generating many template-driven pages at real scale from a dataset.
Zero-click search (): an answer delivered directly on the results page itself -- the real reason AEO and GEO exist at all.
llms.txt (): a proposed file telling AI crawlers what content to prioritize -- real, but adoption is still genuinely uneven as of this writing.
The real, practical 2026 stack
Said plainly: technical SEO plus E-E-A-T is still the real foundation everything else sits on. AEO and GEO sit on top of that foundation — clear, direct answers; structured data; and genuine brand mentions across the sources LLMs actually trust. Nothing above replaces that foundation; it all depends on it.
Your real first steps
Don't try to action all of these at once. Start with the two guides this glossary points to — SEO: Zero to Hero for the real foundation, then AEO & AI Agents for the answer-era layer on top of it. Everything else here is a map for when you need it, not a checklist to clear today.
Frequently asked
Do I need to do all of these at once?
No — most creators and small businesses only ever need classic SEO plus AEO/GEO; the platform-specific terms matter only once you're genuinely active on that specific platform.
Is GEO different from AEO?
They overlap heavily — AEO targets being pulled into a direct answer (snippets, voice, AI answers), while GEO specifically targets citation inside a generative AI's own written response.
